How To Make Good Rap Music - vol. 1

So..... your an aspiring rapper. You dream of being on stage, and seeing the crowd go crazy over your music. You want them to sing along with you as you spit your flows. You want to go on sold out world tours. You want to get your family in a better position. There are so many things you want to do with your music, but like most rappers there is one thing that you are probably forgetting... the music must be good enough. I know you are sitting there right now saying that my music is good I don't know what this dude is talking about. All of my friends, and family have told me that I am the best rapper out.

Not to be rude or judgmental at all but, that is probably the main thing that makes a bad rapper even worst. They have friends that are telling them how great they are, and how they are going to be the next Nas, or Jay Z, even Pac, or Biggie. The best critic for your music however is the person you have never met, and before you let them hear it, you have to first understand music yourself. When you have an understanding of music to the point that you don't need your family and friends to tell you how good it is, to know how good it is, then you are in a better position. Here are some things that you can do to get your music to a point where you can say exactly that.

1. Know who you are as a person.

I know this sounds very stupid to say... I mean who don't know themselves right? Still if most rappers now a days wrote down 10 things that they believe in the most, they will actually see that they don't even write or rap about it. They rap about what they see, and hear most of the time, and what they believe their "friends" want to hear. This is the absolute worst mistake ever someone could make, you have to know your own values. The reason I say this is because no matter what you go through, there is someone out there who goes through the exact same thing. So you make one song about how things are in your home, from your perspective, and your beliefs on how it should be. All of a sudden you have the biggest hit in America, or even the world. Do exactly what I said, write down some of your values and beliefs before you start making music, and make that what your music is about. You will see people actually listening to you instead of the beats from now on that is a guarantee.

2. Know what good music sounds like.

Songs don't make it to the chart for no reason. There is sometimes just one thing about song that makes it absolutely outstanding. Sometimes there are many things about a song that makes it what it is. Either way there is a formula in music that makes it thrust to the top of the charts. You have to know the history of good music, in order to consistently make good music. An artist can stumble upon a good idea and end up with a hit but at the end of the day not know where the next one is coming from, really because he has no idea how he made the hit in the first place.

I recently did an interview on this topic with Spade of Money Makin Martians he had this to say:

" Be yourself, and let it all out. There are no hand outs in the music industry. Look at how artists like Kendrick Lamar are bringing originality, and culture back to the game. Good music is simply something that good people can vibe to. Good music has longevity, and never dies. Look at how many people, even folks that weren't alive when Biggie was alive still listen to his music."

At the end of the day making good rap music is alot more than what they make it seem like in today's industry. 10 years from now alot of today's music will be forgotten and yesterday's music will still be around. There was just a better understanding of music before this generation. Alot of the rappers in the old days knew the value of every word. Just to leave you with a final word, its not about whats happening around you on the radio, its about whats happening inside of you, in your household, in your life. Music is about what people can relate to, more than what they are listening to right this very moment.
