Today we are here to talk about the 24 year old Brooklyn, New York born, Atlanta, Georgia raised MC SP, with his New Wave
mixtape on DatPiff. This review will be an interesting one. We have the
concept right now of a rapper who combines hip hop and dubstep which is
a new idea.. but how did it work out? I am about to get into that right
now. With two completed projects in two years already under his belt, I
am absolutely curious as to what this mixtape will be like.
* Production analysis:
Overall for this mixtape so far... I give the production selection a
rating of (6.5/10). The usage of the dubstep beats was a very creative
idea so I have to take my hat off to that. The fact that there were so
many of the same type of beats, may just be a little too much, and some
of the beats were just not all that. Some of the beats seemed to just be
"settled for" in order to keep the theme of the mixtape. I would say
that this was very creative production wise and entertaining as well.
Only thing that I would say is that this mixtape lacked edge on the
production side, wasn't completely captivating at every moment of the
tape.
* Songs analysis:
Overall there were alot of good songs on this mixtape. The songs that
stood out to me the most was the "Haunt You", and the "Fam Night"...
they had an all around good feel. Haunt you was a great song to start
the mixtape off with. "Real Sh**" was another good song that I think
would be a global track that everybody can love. It kind of got a little
bland with the pre-made hooks being in place. I would have loved to
hear more original hooks on the tape to give me more of a feeling that I
am listening to some real original talent.
The
lyrics were great 90% of the time, but SP's delivery could have been
alot more emotional over the course of the mixtape. There were some
points that gave me the impression that he was reading off of the paper
and not drawing energy from inside to push the words out. The original
sound of his voice is actually appealing though. He definitely has the
voice to make something happen in this game.
As
far as the "Dub Hop" movement... I think I got a whole lot better vibe
when I listened to his previous mixtapes over regular beats. Of course
one could argue that having a new sound is never bad, and that being on
regular beats with a regular flow has been done. However, most of the
time its the regular music that makes it to the top of the charts.
Regardless of my opinion I would still have to give the music on this
mixtape an (7/10) for originality, and the fact that the kid can really
spit.
* Songwriting/Concept analysis: SP
had some nice concepts on this mixtape. His execution of the concepts
to me is one thing he has to work on. With the right words to fit those
concepts he could have had a more stand out, and must hear release.
Gotta give the songwriting a (7/10) on the fact that his bars were not
something that you want to tell your friends about, or that you would
remember and recite. He has to learn to go to the extreme with every
bar. The songs themselves were something to listen to, but not something
you want to play all day every day (hit record status).
* Overall marketability and success prediction:
When it comes to marketing music in the industry, there is a thin line
between sellable and complete flop. This mixtape.... I give it a (8/10)
on marketability. The success rate should be fairly good as far as
getting support from potential, and pre-existing fans. I think that the
mixtape concept on the whole will draw in a large audience, and give him
a good buzz for his next release. Again though I have to go back to the
songwriting and concept analysis and say that this weak point is a must
fix in the future.
The
"Dub Hop" (Hip Hop/Dubstep) idea was a great one, but more time could
have been spent on perfection. This was a fantastic attempt to do
something different, and deserves 2 thumbs up on effort. There will be
talks around the town about this one, especially in the sub-urban areas
where dubstep is popular. Still the mixtape is in need of a more global
approach, and some of the songs gave a spark of having that edge.
