Mixtape Review
Artist: Phillip Wolf
Mixtape: Philosophy 101
Rating: 6/10 (Almost there)
Music is a tricky thing when it wants to be. Without the ear for it, the passion to create it or even listen to it is pointless. Most fans have no idea what they are listening to, all they hear are words and beats. Most artists don't know what they are creating, all they know is get on the mic and rhyme. Some artists do have a good sense of direction when it come to music though, and I feel like Phillip Wolf is one of them. This is the review of his latest mixtape "Philosophy 101". Don't let my 6/10 rating fool you, this project is an undeniably good piece of musical work that should not be slept on. Lets start by talking about the pros and cons here.
Pros
The lyrics are on point for this project. Phillip can really put his words together well. His music is also recorded at very good quality, the vocals are very dynamic. The project also has a very great selection of featured arists. No song was bad, they were all good in their own way.
Cons
Phillip could definitely work on his delivery a lot more. At times he seemed to struggle through lines, and rapped as if he may have either been reading of a page or practiced his bars for a very little amount of time. As for the mixtape there were way too many sample beats on there. The entire first half of the mixtape was sample after sample. I would definitely suggest that he find more original beats to work on for his next project, not just to mix it up but to give it a more creative feeling.
My Critique
I liked the more laid back side of Phillip Wolf. When he went for the more animated and playful style of rap it just seemed to be his weakness. He also needs to work more on his breathing, and swallowing techniques during verses. It seemed at times that he struggled through lines and just barely got them out. Next time around I suggest more songs like 'How Do It Feel' or 'Ms Dj'. Those songs really showed how creative and unpredictable he can get, and there was not enough of that on this mixtape.
My Final Thoughts
I would definitely say to Phillip Wolf "don't give up on your music". With a few minor adjustments this project could have easily jumped from a 6/10 to an 8/10. He has all of the tools needed to make a classic emcee, but has to learn how to put them to good use. I definitely suggest he seek out a producer with more experience and more willingness to guide him through his projects. The music was good, but he is very well capable of great. Last but not least I urge Phillip to start selling his music. Free downloads of your music make it worth less in the long run.
Ending this as I end many of my reviews, if approached by Phillip Wolf in the streets would I choose to support by purchasing "Philosophy 101"? Yes! I definitely would, I think this mixtape is worth the listen and worth the loot as well. Phillip Wolf I look forward to hearing what you come out with next.
