Are Cover Songs The New Way To Get Signed To A Major Label?

When we were young there was no such thing as a cover song. We would listen to songs thousands of times to get the lyrics right, enjoy singing along, but appreciate a song enough not to go to an actual studio and re-record it for our on personal use. You remember the times our favorite old school artists were flooding the radio with classic material. Every singer and rapper on earth was in search of their own beat producer so that they could create a classic record of their own.

Now a days, singers and rappers have found a new way in to the main stream lime light by using covers of their favorite songs to gain attention. We see it every day on any and every site you can upload a piece of music. Artists with their own rendered versions of our favorite hits are flooding every network we communicate on daily. Although to some of us this may be annoying, to the artist this is a heaven sent gift from God himself. Finally a way to be recognized for their talents without needing the writing skills of a Lauryn Hill, or Mary J. Blige.

According to NPR Tyler Ward was able to buy a car and a house with money he made posting videos of himself covering pop hits on YouTube. Ward uses YouTube to promote his music career posting covers trying to gain new fans. He actually started out doing cover songs in the bar, trying to make ends meet. When he figured out what YouTube was, he just figured he could put these online, and see what happens. The end result was an opening slot for the Jonas Brothers on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and a headlining tour through Europe, the U.S. and Canada.

So of course you can see why cover songs have become so important to the up and coming independent artists of the world. Every artist no matter what they do, wants their shot to perform on the big stage and show their talent. I myself have become a believer after many years of dreading the quickly growing cover song trend in the music industry. Maybe now after reading this article, the world will begin to pay more attention to the independent artists around the globe who are uploading cover songs right now to their favorites sites.
