Well you know the secret to finding the chord and melody when making original rap beats is this... The 1st note... the 4th note and the 5th note are all connected. The first being the root of the scale you chose for your melody.
Look at the image below.
This is an A minor melodic... If you look at the scale you will see that the first note is A, the fourth note is D and the 5th note is E. If played together they are a natural chord progression, just as lon as you remember your root is the note you rest on. The chords for the first, fourth, and fifth note are naturally used together in chord progressions.
All you have to do is know your scales... it the scale combined with that technique. First you start at the root, then you progress through the scale to the 4th and 5th notes. Once you have found those notes. Begin to mix up different ways of playing them. When you find a good PROGRESSION you simply add in notes played in a different swagger that are all the notes of the chord you are playing. This is your melody in the works!
The melody would run through the chord. Its the notes involved in the 3 chords that you use to make up the melody, and the rest of the chord progression if you happen to need a fourth or fifth chord. Its the order in which you play the notes involved in the chords that makes a melody.
As far as knowing the types of chords you need, you just have to know when something is wrong... you have to train your ears to know when the right dynamic is there in the chord. A slight change from major to minor in your chord progression can take a beat all the way. For instance listen to me breaking down the beat below. I made switches from major to minor in this chord progression.

This was a beat that producers would always say to me, I like you you switched from major to minor. Its a dramatic change. You will learn things like this through practice. When it comes to making dirty south beats this is a big life saver as well. Especially because the melodies are usually repetitive.
All in all though this is all there is to making a good chord progression and a good melody happen. I would like everybody to leave comments and tell me what you think. If you would like to hear more of my original rap beats visit http://dirtyscopebeatz.com
